Many students in Singapore’s Normal (Technical) (or NT) stream do indeed have specific dreams and aspirations.

Some of these students fail to achieve their dreams, but many others succeed – with the help of specific kinds of interventions.

Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education (ITE), commonly derided as “It’s the End”, might be better celebrated as “It’s Truly Excellent”.

The ‘Malay stereotype’ – that Malays lack motivation and aspiration – is just that, an unfounded stereotype.

Every night, the sun goes down on Singaporeans who have not had enough to eat, or who do not know where their next meal is coming from. Surprised? As Singapore has shifted from Third World to First, the nation has shaken off the widespread hunger and food insecurity that prevailed at independence. Yet, this “developing world” version of widespread hunger and endemic deprivation has been replaced by a very first-world problem: hunger and food insecurity afflicting individuals or pockets of neighbourhoods, even in one of the world’s wealthiest nations.

Financial Aid for Students: An Invitation to Dream

The budgets allocated to support students with financial needs increase annually. The Government provides financial aid through schools, Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs), directly to needy students and indirectly by subsidising education costs. These increases supplement support from civil society, self-help organisations, social service organisations, caring neighbours and relatives to create a comprehensive level of support.

“A graduate in every family” – this was a goal proposed during the 3^rd National Convention of Singapore Muslim Professionals in 2012. It has since become a mantra of sorts for self-help organisations like AMP intending to help low-income families shift up the social and economic ladder.
